Hi I was just wondering what kinds of sport you have.
We have several sports teams and clubs. Basketball, volleyball, soccer, hockey, badminton, wrestling, weight lifting, and field hockey to name most of them.
Your time at high school is as much fun as you make it! Get involved in the school! Join clubs, or sports teams. Go out for a position on student council. There are spirit/theme days throughout the year. During the winter holiday time, there are often seasonal activities, there are door decorating contests and halloween events. Get involved and you can help decide what events are happening within the school.
I can't give you a complete list because I am sure I will miss a few but here are a few that come to mind. Right now we have a group of students travelling Europe. They are visiting famous World War Two sites that are significant in terms of Canadian history in countries like Holland and France. We also have a group of students in New York City right now. Every second summer, we have a Europe Trip group that goes on a 10 day trip to different countries. These trips are open to anyone.
The physical education department has taken a number of trips. They involve sports teams going to places like Hawaii, Bermuda and Cuba.
Teachers will also arrange trips to more local destinations as part of the curriculim. There are far too many to mention. The Guidance department will arrange outings to colleges and universities as you get to more senior grades.
I'm not sure what you mean by your question but I'll give you some information about gym classes and the gym itself. Almost everyone will take a gym class in grade 9. It will be one of your 4 periods. You will be in a classroom for some gym classes and in the gym or outside for the rest of them. You will have time at the start of the class to get changed in the changeroom. Your teacher will tell you what time you must be ready for. We have 2 gymnasiums at DSS, the main gym which can be split in half by a big, moveable wall and the other gymnasium is QE Hall. The main gym is usually available at lunch to play sports but a teacher must be supervising and their is no food or drink allowed in there during lunch time. The gyms are quite busy with team sports both before school and after school.
Yes there is a cross country team. Mr. Dorland has coached that team for a number of years with great success. All sports, clubs and activities will have announcements when they are getting ready for the season. Listen to the announcements and attend the meetings. The DSS website also lists upcoming sports and events. Check it daily for lots of great information. http://www.dsspanthers.ca If you want more information, just ask Mr. Dorland when you see him in the hall at break, at lunch or after school. You'll know Mr D.-he's the one walking the hall after school playing the flute!
To sign up for sports and clubs you need to listen to the announcements every morning. Coaches will announce when and where teams will begin tryouts. Some coaches will have a meeting first, some will post a sign up sheet while others will start with a practice. Listen to the announcements, its very important.
Make a habit of going to the DSS website - http://www.dsspanthers.ca- every day. You will find a link to the daily announcements so if you don't hear one in the morning you can listen to the announcements on-line.
For the answer to this one I went to the expert- Mrs. McMahon-the guru of Guidance here at DSS. Here is what she said-
"There are opportunities to be a student volunteer but you must be a senior student (grade 11 & 12), have excellent marks, especially in math and science and be recommended by a teacher."

I was wondering, is there an opportunity to sign up to be a tutor?
