Courses and Timetables
If you have a question about the courses you are taking, course levels, your timetable or how the schedule works, post it here!
A credit is what you 'earn' if you complete and pass a course. If you complete every course in grade 9, you will have earned 8 credits. You must earn 30 credits to graduate.
We're working on your timetables right now, but it is a long process. We will give you your timetables on Thursday August 28th. That's the Thursday before school starts. You will receive an invitation to attend that day in the mail.
This is a good time for that question. We're coming to visit you this week to talk about course selection. Every Grade 9 student will take science, math, english, french, phys.ed., and geography. That's 6 courses. You must take 8 courses in grade 9 so that leaves with with two choices to make. At DSS you can choose from the following: Drama, Music, Art, Business(Computers), Tech, Communications, Hairstyling and Aesthetics. As you can see you have a lot of options to choose from in Grade 9 at DSS!
This is a good question because the course has changed slightly for Grade 8 students coming to DSS in September of 2009. In general you will be using the construction, automotive and manufacturing rooms as well as the computer lab. You will learn a lot about shop safety in every aspect of the course. Every one of these rooms will be open during the open house on Tuesday Jan 13th, so make sure you ask lots of questions when you visit these rooms.
Good question. I went over this years class lists and this is what I found. We have 4 Grade 9 Tech. classes this year. They have an average total of 21 students in each class and, on average, there are 6.5 girls in each class. One class has as few as 3 girls in it while in another class there are 13 girls and just 10 boys, so the numbers can vary.
The link on the DSS website that tells what the times are for the daily schedule does not work. Can you tell me when each class begins and ends? Thanks.
First of all-I'll let the students who run the website know about the problem with the link. 1st period is 8:54 to 10:09, 2nd period is 10:17 to 11:32, lunch runs to 12:30. Period 3 is 12:30 to 1:45 and period 4 is 1:53 to 3:08.
You do not need to buy an instrument for music class- we have evrything you will need here at DSS. You do not need to have any musical background to take grade 9 music, Mrs. Spencer will teach you everything you need to know- you just need to bring your enthusiasm for music!
This year(2009), you will get your timetables on Grade 9 Orientation Day which is Wednesday September 2nd. You will receive an invitaion in the mail to come that day. On Orientation Day you will get your timetable, meet all four of your teachers and spend some time in each of your four classrooms.

We would like to know what courses we have to take in grade 9 and what courses are optional?

What things do you learn in tech class?

How many girls take Tech class? I want to do it but I don't want to be alone as a girl. =S

For music class, do we have to have an instrument picked out and bought? How much musical experience do we need?
